Forums - How are reviews tracked?

Hello,

Love using Renshuu.

I would like to know more about how reviews are tracked.

Recently I added a new schedule (N1 vocabulary). It has a lot of terms already due for review, and I'm not sure why.

I finished the N2 schedule of words about six months ago. I've also been adding my own terms to various schedules.

In my new N1 schedule:

3045 words total (sounds good)

471 words already learned (sounds good)

2574 words to learn (sounds good)

188 words to study today (why?)

This morning, I got up to date on all my other schedules. So, if the reviews are tracked by word, I wouldn't expect any reviews.

Alternatively, if the reviews are reset on the new schedule, then I would expect all 471 words (which I previously learned on different schedules) to now be due for review.

Instead it seems to be somewhere in between, with only 188 words now being due for review.

I'm a bit worried that I might end up reviewing a word twice as much as necessary because I have it in two schedules.

Is this likely, and if so how can I mitigate it?

I think there are a number of N2/N3 words in N1 because those schedules have changed over time and people who completed the older schedules still need to learn them.

If a word is in 2 schedules, you will not review it twice. If it gets reviewed in one schedule it will no longer be in that day's review for the other schedule. You will actually see the review count go down. Happens to me all the time because I am going through N1 and still reviewing my merged N2/N3 schedule.

It makes sense to include words in multiple schedules.

I'm not sure what to do now. There are words like , which I have reviewed 4 times in August. 52% mastery. It's not due for review in the schedule where I added it. But, it is still labeled as due for review in the new schedule. So, which schedule do I believe?

I trust what you say about it not showing the same word word twice in one day. I would just like to know a little more about how this situation arises. I don't mind doing 472 unnecessary reviews. In the grand scheme of things, that's nothing. It seems like you're hinting that this is a one off problem? If so, that's fine, and perhaps I don't need to worry about it anymore.

Maybe the old schedule hit its limit before getting to , while the new schedule only has 400-ish words to choose from? But that's just a guess. How does the daily study goal look like for the next week? Are the numbers just as high or do they look more manageable?

I don't remember having so many reviews when I started N1, but I started it within a few days of completing N2. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Thanks for replying.

The old schedules haven't hit their limits. I've been doing all the reviews they raise.

I don't have any experience reading the study goals. I've just had a look at it. For the N1 schedule, it shows 41, 30, 32, 34, 21, 19, 14 as forecast for the next week. I suppose those numbers are the number of reviews which I might be expected to do? Much lower than the 188 today.

Yes, the numbers are planned reviews for each day, assuming you finish all reviews. The numbers can change if you make mistakes because the mastery would drop and that's what's used to decide when to review a particular word.

edit: I did a little test, and when you answer wrong, it seems you also get an extra review on the following day, regardless of mastery level.

So in your case, if you made 10 mistakes today, tomorrow's reviews would end up being 41+10=51

@Bog Playmate "There are words like , which I have reviewed 4 times in August. 52% mastery. It's not due for review in the schedule where I added it. But, it is still labeled as due for review in the new schedule." < My guess is you have different vectors selected? It will never quiz you on the same vector across multiple schedules. Reviews are tracked by vector on the terms themselves, fully independent of any schedule.

The next review date is set by the "Mastery level spacing" of the schedule you review the term from. This only matters if you have custom spacing, but it's still nice to know.

This setting also matters: "Vector handling | Allow a term to be studied multiple times in a day (once for each vector ready to study)"

Let's say you have two schedules: Schedule A, where the setting is turned on, and Schedule B, where it isn't.

Suppose you're studying 3 vectors in each schedule, and term X, which is present in both A and B, has all 3 vectors ready for review.

If you study X in Schedule A, you'll cycle through all 3 vectors, reviewing them one by one. You'll also still be able to study any other vectors for X in any other schedule.

If you study X in Schedule B, you'll study only 1 of the 3 vectors, while the other vectors will be "blocked" from being studied on any other schedule (including the 2 remaining vectors in Schedule A) for that day.

Basically, as soon as you study a term in a schedule where the setting isn't turned on, its reviews for all other vectors that are due today will be postponed until tomorrow across all schedules.

( edited for accuracy. Hopefully it's all good now. I did test it to make sure, but it can be a little confusing )

[ I'm just explaining how that setting works. You probably don't have it turned on anywhere, and I'm not recommending it to you ]

Ah, thank you both for explaining. The replies have been really helpful.

@ギョルギ After checking my settings, the vector thing was my problem. The N1 schedule I added had different vectors from the other schedule. When I aligned the vectors, the reviews disappeared.

@ヒヨドリ thank you for explaining the study goals. That's a nice way to know how much time I will need to allocate in coming days. And I'm glad it gives extra reviews when getting them wrong.

Now I can get into a good routine with the new words, and not worry! Fantastic.

I think it tracks your progress and which words you don't really understand and change what you review to let you get stronger at your weak points, it may also give you questions you're already good at to make sure you really understand

A schedule that doesn't have this turned on will "lose" the reviews (regardless of vectors that are ready to study) for a term as soon as you review any of its vectors in another schedule. Lose for the day, that is.
A schedule that has this turned on will have a review for each vector (that's ready to study). It's a bit confusing since it doesn't show them in the total. You get a new review for the next vector as soon as you finish reviewing the previous one.

I kind of thought it was the other way around: the vector handling setting on the schedule you are studying determines whether reviews for other vectors due today will be postponed until tomorrow in all schedules.

Tested it just now, and you're right. I guess I never noticed since I have that setting on pretty much all of my schedules, and that behaviour makes much less sense to me :D

I'll correct the information in my in my previous post. Thanks! kao_thumb.png

PS: I'll give you some points :D

Edit: Alright, should be good now. That's the behaviour I observed during testing anyway.
