Forums - Diagonal guidelines in the Writing Exercise box

This is a minor thing, but would it be possible to add diagonal, corner to corner guides along with the top to bottom and right to left ones in the box used in writing exercises? Perhaps as a toggled option?

I don't know if the big box in writing exercise quizzes and the smaller handwriting box for typing in answers have their visuals tied to each other. In the smaller boxes the extra lines would probably be too much clutter. In the writing exercises however they would fix my issues with "grounding" my strokes.

A kanji writing practice app I used before had these additional guides, and they are the only thing I miss after switching.

(Bit of a side note, but that other app became unusable to me because visual flair and flashing added in an update was medically unsafe for me. Thank you for not doing that and offering options for reducing color and such!)

This is an interesting request - I've never had something asked like this. I cannot say I've ever seen any materials in Japan that used diagonals. Can I ask you a bit more about why you feel they benefit you?

I don't think I've seen diagonals outside the mentioned app either, and I think they're probably not helpful outside the context of a mobile app quizzing you on how to write kanji.

With the diagonals, I was able to nail the placement of my strokes even in the quizzes that only gave me the definition as a hint and didn't have stroke by stroke confirmation. Without them so far I've had more trouble with that, even with kanji that I'm shown first and with each stroke confirmed.

For a concrete example, I wistfully reminisce about the diagonals each time I draw the radical, because the top and bottom strokes would roughly align to the diagonals. With I actually had improved with the diagonals and can get it right, but with other radicals I still keep surprising myself with how much vertical room I can find to be wrong!

In summary, I think it comes down to the writing field on mobile being larger and therefore easier to get lost in, and my messy handwriting benefiting from some baby wheels.

In any case, this is a minor thing, and self-evaluation means there's no real need to be pixel perfect anyway. So, I can also live without the diagonals if they are any trouble to implement. 👍

Thanks for the clarification!

It is something I *might* be able to add in the future. However, I have literally months of "I need to do this" or "I've been putting this off" stuff in front of me, so a lot of the more niche requests are not something I can accept at the moment :(

That is perfectly understandable. But hey, thank you anyway for considering it!
