recently I started to notice more and more words that I know (indicated with yellow light bulb), but were in no schedule (the plus icon was grey and no schedule selected when checking). I went to Advanced Search and found out there are about 300 of them, from what I believe, different vocab schedules. I don't know how this happened, but suspected it was because I merged several vocab schedules in the past, so I removed them and added fresh unmerged schedules again but apart from a few new words popping up nothing happened. I then created special schedule with those words ("Missing known words" schedule on my profile) and as expected, most of these were in review.
I didn't lost any progress, so all is safe, just a lot of new review now. But I was just wondering how this happened? Is it possible that merging schedules somehow disconnects some words from the schedules?
I have 829 "known" words I've never studied, 90 of which are not in a schedule. Would probably be more if I didn't have a schedule with ~24k "often in newspapers" words.
Looks like a lot of them are just different ways to write a word I've already studied. I guess they get tagged as "known" when you learn the "main" term. Advanced Search shows all of the variations separately.
Make sure you're not just adding a bunch of alternate spellings and versions of words you already have. Things like リポート showing up because you've studied レポート. Those are all treated as separate terms.
This is a really good point and some of them are indeed different reading like 御茶 or 朝御飯. But there are also words like ゼロ, オーバー, 愛, ゴミ and others which I studied, I can see it in the history for each term and most of these has more than 5 level in mastery, but were missing from any schedule. It must be some combination of merging schedules and helper schedules I suppose although it's quite weird for simple terms like ゴミ or ゼロ which I expected to be in some beginner schedules.
The majority of them are the "rarer" versions, and this slight dissonance grew a bit in strength after the merging tool that came in. For example, ごみ is in the schedule, but ゴミ no longer is. However, I did not remove the "I know this" data from the user accounts, so that is causing what seems like a break in the actual data and what you're expecting.
