Why is the past tense for verbs like 覚える 覚えた instead of 覚えっさ? Same with 忘れる. Isn't it supposed to be 忘れった?
Both those verbs are ichidan, which means in casual past, you just remove the -る ending and add -た.
Other examples : 見る becomes 見た ; 食べる becomes 食べた
You're thinking of godan verbs ending in -る, where indeed the verb is conjugated by adding -った.
Example : 蹴る(ける) becomes 蹴った
(tip : most -eru verbs [-える; -める; -れる; etc] are ichidan)
Both are ichidan verbs (also known as る-verbs):

Thank you so much!!
