Why is the past tense for verbs like える えた instead of えっさ? Same with れる. Isn't it supposed to be れった?

Both are ichidan verbs (also known as る-verbs):

Both those verbs are ichidan, which means in casual past, you just remove the -る ending and add -た.

Other examples : る becomes た ; べる becomes べた

You're thinking of godan verbs ending in -る, where indeed the verb is conjugated by adding -った.

Example : る(ける) becomes った

(tip : most -eru verbs [-える; -める; -れる; etc] are ichidan)
