Forums - Reducing grammar lesson mastery down when getting a wrong answer?

I find getting an answer wrong in grammar is extremely punishing right now. Doubly so(mentally) when you are wrong because words you never heard off before or the question is mixed up with other grammar that you also haven't learn before. It has come to the point where I'm starting to dread doing grammar lessons.

It doesn't help because some of the sentence requires you to have knowledge of very complex nuances that I would have never figured out unless I take extra time to research the whole thing.

Is there a way to reduce the amount of mastery that goes down when you get an answer wrong. Getting two wrong answer shouldn't bring down your mastery by 3 whole levels...

Apologies for piggybacking off your post, Kotohood! But I'm looking for related info regarding vocabulary schedules: I know I have previously seen settings where I can choose how far mastery level on terms drops when I get a question wrong. But I've searched the help section and anything that looks like "settings" and I can't seem to find it anymore. Can someone point me to those settings? Or are they no longer a thing?

Thanks very much to anyone who might know!

@kjulia28 Look up "When I answer something incorrectly" in Settings. It's not very flexible though.

@Kotohood Maybe play around with "Show redo button after wrong answer" and "Show 'Mark as wrong' button"? It would be on you to be honest though. I also like "Star Selection" questions, find them a lot more chill. Pro only though.

I can't think of anything else. I don't do a lot of grammar myself.

I've heard these remarks from others as well, and it's definitely something I'm considering as a future change.

I've added this in as an experimental feature. If you'd like to try it, please pop open the menu > settings > then go to the Experimental section.

I will give it a shot. Thanks you.

In my experience, I just try what makes sense, even if I don't get all the words. I believe you actually can adjust that in schedule settings though. If you're at the very early stages of grammar, it certainly can seem taxing to deal with the kind of questions that you haven't learned, or weakest in your knowledge.

This happens at times when sentences are mixed in with those concepts, and most likely doesn't fit all schedules. Believe me, I have a favoritism towards topic-specific schedules, which may limit the length of my practice, and yet it also sometimes bears some suffering with advanced concepts mixed into it. I tend to ignore this for the sake of what the schedule is for.

Though, I would safely presume that it isn't the point of the quiz. I do have my schedules set up so that if I do get it wrong, I can try again to no penalty. That way, you can at least redo it until you get it right. Skill/score-wise, kind of cheating, but eventually it will be done right, since you're allowed to practice for as long and as much as you desire.

Should you get around to it, you can learn these things another time. You then don't have to worry about being penalized or having to be forced to learn it. Just try to get the answer right (and you may also be allowed a different answer, but still grammatically correct), and you need not be concerned too much with the exposure to strange things.

I tend to lean like Icepick87 - ultimately the purpose of Renshuu isn’t to pass levels. The gamification stuff is there to reinforce and (hopefully) set in concrete your learnings. IMO if you don’t know the answer, whether due to one term or an obtuse point you just need more exposure to it. Ultimately that occurs naturally when you get answers wrong and that’s kind of the point. Need to focus on the goal - improving - however slowly - reading, comprehension & output. Mastery levels and such are useful trackers to the main goal - nothing more, nothing less.

To me, I understand the goal, but the frustration remains and ultimately the way that renshuu does grammar is not helpful. It doesn't lead to a condusive environment for learning.

Which is why I ask for a way to fit the lesson more to my liking. If I am going to get the answer wrong anyways and I'm going to be punished to do excessive grammar review everyday due to no fault of mine, then at the very least I should be able to control how much mastery I lose or how much I am allowed to do per day.

You actually can cheat that, but OK. Leave it as it is, you're bound by the scoring system in place. There is no way you're not in control the whole time.

Let's put the "how to study" discussion aside (or move it to a different thread) - I hinted at it before, but it was my intention to hijack the thread to see how the new experimental feature works.

Ultimately, though, we're not here to tell one another that their way of learning is right or wrong.
