I know it's super common to hate kanji or be really intimidated by it (being fair, I was intimidated by it too), but it's honestly been my favourite part of learning japanese!

Maybe the way renshuu uses kanji is just really motivating for me: whenever I learn a new kanji, the furigana gets removed, and I feel like I'm making actual progress. Plus maybe it's just that I enjoy drawing, but visualising the meaning in the kanji has been a really fun visualisation exercise, not to mention it helps me memorise them easier.

Speaking of memorisation: kanji has been so helpful with remembering vocabulary! Maybe I just associate things better with pictures, but there are so many words where I just couldn't remember the pronunciations when written in kana, but am immediately able to remember them after I learn the kanji (this is especially true for verbs).

Anyway, just wanted to share some much needed love for kanji! kao_heart.png I totally understand why people are frustrated with it though!

That's the spirit! Also, I feel the same way. It's my favourite part too.

Actually enjoying kanji definitely sets you up for success in the long run. kao_heart.png

I've always wondered how much kanji helps with vocab memorisation. My vocab has always been miles ahead of my reading ability, so I pretty much never get to experience what you're describing.

Yay for the Kanji Appreciation Club!

Can't say I've ever had the issue of hating kanji or feeling frustrated with them. I chose to learn Japanese, it's my own goal. If I love Japanese, I love it for what it is. Otherwise, it would be like me saying I love driving a car, but I'm annoyed at all the physical exercise I need to do turning the steering wheel and pushing the pedals.

Kanji have layers upon layers of meaning, and the alienness of having that expressed in a non-phonetical way is so fascinating. I also love the feeling of reading and finding that the information gets conveyed to my brain almost without me knowing how. (Though I'm still a slow reader.)

And yes, call me crazy, but they're fun to draw. Even when I get them wrong. In my formal education, mistakes weren't tolerated. Japanese and kanji in particular have taught me to appreciate mistakes as a form of durable learning, and for that します。
