Hello! Do I learn katakana first then the basic words, or can I do both at the same time?

You can do whichever you want. Most people do hiragana first, then katakana, then basic vocabulary, then first year kanji, but others find that mixing them up is more engaging.

Actually it's easier to remember kana when you are confident in some vocabulary! Also, it's good to use simplest kanji right from the start. I always write kanji in my notes, and add furigana when I don't know it well. When you remember a certain word with one kanji reading it's more likely for you to guess the reading in different example, and similarly, the more words you recognize with kana, the better you know that kana separately.

Hiragana before katakana.
But I found it fun to learn both kana and words at the same time.

Once you are comfortable with kana, start kanji.

Also seeing the kana with English meaning, helped me retain my kana better.
