Is the sentence linking feature supposed to transmogrify all the kanji in the sentence into kana? I assumed the feature would be more useful specifically for when using Japanese IME and having it convert words into kanji automatically, as reading practice.

Am I missing something? Does it convert to Kanji only if you technically 'know' the kanji themselves according to your master levels of each word? I feel like it's poorly explained in this regard, or if it was explained I missed it. Also, I'm not entirely sure how to access the 'bonus' English translations I have the option to write, let alone anyone else accessing mine. Is it a site option somewhere?

In the site's defense, using the dictionary too much in question corner does make me feel a little icky...

I'm not entirely clear on what you're describing - if you could post a few screenshots, that would help :)

Well, I'm not sure what I could screenshot. To be specific:

  • I have no way of viewing my own or others' optional (+5 XP) English translations of answers in Question Corner, despite submitting translations for all my answers thus far. I've checked the vertical ellipses menu on comments, but no dice. Excuse me, I am blind and missed the 'Hide English Translations' button. Ignore this point.
  • The Sentence Binding (chain link) feature that 'converts' your answer into an example sentence that can be hovered over turns all kanji into exclusively Kana. For example, would become わたし (regardless of the common usage of a word being kanji or kana). In my case, became なまえ once bound.

The only explanation I have for the former is that I'm missing a setting somewhere [This was correct.], and the only one I have for the latter is much the same. I suppose it could be some sort of beginner only feature I'm locked into (like how Shiritori has an opt-out beginner lounge)? But that's just a guess.

It's even more confusing considering the experimental settings explicitly has a feature of enabling furigana in Answers, though it's turned off for me - which would imply that kanji shouldn't be getting turned into exclusively kana when bound.

My comment in question, as an example: Link

For the second, you'll want to go to menu > settings > Vocabulary, and check out what is says for "how to show unknown kanji" :)

Posting a screenshot as you requested. For reference, I already had the 'furigana' button in the Vocabulary settings selected. However, Sentence Binding still only shows kana; the word I am hovering over is the example I had given. Despite it being in kanji form in the base sentence, converting it with the binding feature resulted in Kana only, at least on my screen.

Unless I'm missing something, there's seemingly no way for me to turn the conversion of all kanji to kana 'off' for my sentences, or others. What I'm wanting is for bound sentences to still have kanji so I can get used to attributing beginner words I already know with the actual kanji themselves, as will be inevitable in the learning process.

I am assuming that the experimental feature talking about furigana has nothing to do with this specific problem.

That feature is entirely tied to the quizzes, and nowhere else, so it would not affect this.

Ok, so for , for example, have you studied it before? If so, how does it appear in the "my terms" link on your dashboard, if you search for it in your word list?

You may want to turn on that "unknown kanji in grey" setting on for this test - it'll help clear up a few things for me.

I do agree, though, that something is not working in your account, but I have no doubt we'll be able to get it fixed.

It's entirely plausible that because I hadn't actually started the Beginner Kanji N5 list that it resulted in absolutely no Kanji being transcribed with Sentence Binding? I just have a fundamental lack of understanding as to how the sentence binding feature works, I suppose.

It's very likely that there's not a single kanji inside the Q&A thread that my account 'knows'. The problem then is that there's no way to tell if the original sentence was written with kanji before being bound, and no way to toggle to it if such was the case in this specific circumstance; and in the writing of a sentence, there was no visual feedback that any filtering was actually happening. I'd just thought my kanji were becoming not kanji for no reason.

I suppose my request then is for there to be a toggle for furigana in vocabulary to always show kanji with furigana as opposed to defaulting to kana when you lack the required kanji experience for it to appear? That is, if I am understanding how it functions now?

In my opinion, it's a tad more comfortable to learn the readings from actual sentences as opposed to solely searing yomi readings into my neurons, at least for now, but this problem is getting in the way of that currently.

Thanks again. It's not a lack of understanding on your behalf - it's just a bug, nothing more, nothing less :)

I believe it should be fixed - please take a look now!

The fix seems to have made it so that all kanji (including kanji I know) in the question corner have furigana over them, for me.

The unexpected furigana only appears above the kanji for sentence that have been linked.

I've studied all these kanji.

For unlinked sentences, there is no furigana (as expected).

For the question at the very top (which is linked), no furigana appears (as expected).

It's not a big concern for me. But I thought you should know.
