Although some may disagree, I wouldn't recommend focusing on pitch accents if you're a beginner. I feel like pitch accents is more of a skill that one focuses on once they are already confident with speaking Japanese, but they want to sound more like a native Japanese speaker.

Generally context is going to make that clear. There's not many conversations where one will confuse chopsticks for a bridge, or hair, paper and gods.

And if the context is not clear, one can usually ask the speaker questions to clarify.

Thats right, in the beginning you don't need to focus too much on pitch accent yet. However I think you could already learn just the very basics of the 4 pitch patterns (atamadaka, nakadaka, odaka, heiban). There are some vidéos about it on YouTube and multiple websites that explains it. And then, when you are learning terms, you can try to pronounce them with the right pitch accent so it will stick into your head (I'm doing this and it works pretty wellkao_think.png). But you should be aware that pitch accent in a full sentence differs from the pitch accent of a single word (There are also a few yt videos about it).

On top of this you can do shadowing. You watch a video in japanese and at the same time you repeat what they say without pausing it. But in order to do this properly, your ear has to get used to hearing the pitch accentkao_think.png

And by shadowing you can also improve your intonation, but pitch accent and intonation are two different things.

Anyways you shouldn't worry too much about it yet.kao_great.png I learned about pitch accent pretty late and until then my pronunciation was poop, but it improved a lot since then!

Tbf if it's painful for you, you don't have to study pitch accent at all, ever. You can completely ignore it and still acquire the language fine, and you can speak with the totally wrong pitch on every word and still be understood. Most language learning materials didn't acknowledge that pitch exists at all until relatively recently.

Mastering pitch is important insofar as "sounding like a native speaker", if that's your goal. But you're not a native speaker, you're a learner 🤷‍♀️ Having a foreign accent is to be expected.

Keep in mind English is STRESS, while Japanese is PITCH Accent.. Start from there. Check if your old habits are getting in the way. I highly reccomend going through your Hiraganas\Katakanas. Sometimes the inability to pronounce a certain letter/sound correctly gives you a bad accent as a whole.... Also start with Moras! Japanese have a dfferent system about recognizing sound.. and you probably are familliar, but didn't know what's it called. It really trips foreigners sometimes. Give it time, if you wanna do this I'd reccomend you these youtubers- lots of content I've found useful or liked. She has a video about pitch and devided it into 4 patterns only↓↓

And I literally did this↑ I singed and felt like a fool, but he was right. I caught an error and made me unable to sing. Words were falling apart if I don't get it rightkao_shiawase.png Felt awkward, but I fixed it. Try browse their stuff, maybe you find something, watch a video or two. If it's not working get mad.. drop it, spend your timee larning other stuff hahaha! No, I mean what others said, it's not nessesary. No harm in trying!kao_heart.png

Do japanese people also suffer in pitch accents?

No, they pick it up naturally!

Like I said, Japanese have "a different system about recognizing sound". Pitch accent is how foreigners have to learn it as, since they are not native and it could be different than what you are used to.

@/なな mentioned that they didn't do it as beginner, but picked it up from listening along the way (up in the discussion). However, I understand what I hear, but that didn't help me with my accent! I couldn't speak naturally using my own voice, I still have problems. Shadowing lead to me to haiving an "uwu" voice instead.kao_worry.png

It's not nesessarily a bad thing... I can literally say "Pikachu!" and sound like the real deal ! But I want to be able to talk like a normal person and not act it out.. I feel like my voice doesn't sound feminine at all, when talking in Japanesekao_rocking.pngkao_rocking.png

The more I am concered... the less I am able to relax and talk correctly. My boyfriend agreed, that I sound like I have a personality disorder, because nerviousness makes my voice change frequently.

Totally agree accent it's not nesessarily for begginner! But it's even in renshuu's quiz options, it pops up very early if you're collecting coins for Kao Garden!

It helps you know if you heard hair or paper(kami) + the context. I don't think you always need to dig deeper for a meaning, just to be able to understand a word/sentance . . .

as for Stress. I send a video. I can't really explain it, cuz my native language isn't English . . . I think it's kind of like raising your tone/voice to put more force in it. While Japanese is different... ???kao_sorry.png

I once tried Google: RAMEN, but wrote RAAMEN. Because I started learning Japanese tho..kao_shiawase.png

SOMEBODY, PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT A STRESS ACCENT IS COMPARED TO PITCH!

I also agree not to worry about it. The best way you can learn it is to speak and listen to a lot of Japanese. A while back I had heard the word mispronounced with the wrong pitch accent ( was NOT lol), however it is still easily understandable. But I hear the word so often that of course I know when it sounds weird - over time you will, just like that example, know when something sounds "right" or doesn't sound "right", and when you talk, you will naturally start to accomodate that after hearing yourself not sound right :)

I recommend playing the audio on a lot of sentences on here, and repeating it with the same accent and over time you'll pick it up

⇒ In English, stressed syllables refers to the syllables we say with a "hard" sound. Even as an American, we don't think about the stress, if we say a word with the wrong stress, someone might just correct us after a while. Stressed syllables in English are stronger than the other syllables in the word and similar to pitch accent in Japanese where the stress syllable is the high pitch, but a very slight difference. For example: ピカチュウ in Japanese is pi-ka-chu, each syllable gets the same amount of time and tension. In English, we do this weird thing where the "pi" gets a lot of extra "stress", so we say "PI-kachu" and emphasize the "pi" slightly :) If you let more air burst out of your mouth when saying the "Pi" sound, you will have an American accent for the word Pikachu.

@アっくん I swear my uwu voice sounds right to mekao_shiawase.png

If you let more air burst out of your mouth

I can go lower than quite a few males, even though my voice is feminine. I can't go upper than my voice already is, though! I can change my voice so it resonates near my nose(not my throat) then I sound CUTE ENOUGH !

Accent is natural, but you can GET another accent... that's weird. I'm still figuring out my issue.. sorry for being weirdkao_shiawase.png

I ALMOST UNDERSTOOD YOU, THOUGH! kao_heart.png (I will remeber this when I get more speaking pactice done)

Thanks for your explanation, I hope it helped ! !

I have nothing to contribute except -- ちゃん I'm sure your real voice sounds just fine and totes かわいい! I empathize with your voice changing when you're nervous tho, mine does that too. I think it’s normal, not a personality disorder haha kao_great.png (at least I hope, in my case…)

GUYS, I DID SOME RESEARCH !!

THERE IS NO CORRECT PITCH ACCENT ! kao_don.pngkao_don.png

AN ACCENT is dialect or language! Pronunciation, intonation, and stress patterns have specific characteristics accordingly to region. How you pronounce words can show where you are from!kao_sparkles.png

EXACTLY WHY THERE IS NO CORRECT PITCH IN JAPANESE!kao_great.png

Dialects falls into two pimary categories: Eastern or Western! Different regions have a different accent, actually: Tokyo, Nagasaki, Kanto, Kansai... 47 IN TOTALkao_shock.png

OMGkao_rocking.png

This is the Pitch-accent systems of Japanese:

Tokyo type, KyotoOsaka(Keihan) type, Two-pattern accent, No accentand Speckled areas are ambiguous.

Accent and tone are the most variable aspect of Japanese dialects. Some have no accent at all; of those that do, it may occur in addition to a high or low word tone.kao_dead.pngkao_dead.png

HOW ARE THERE 47 ACCENTS AND YOU GUYS ALL PICKED IT UP "NATURALLY" WHILE ME AND SEEJI DIE HERE !? LIES !!!!kao_shiawase.pngkao_shiawase.png

SEEJI GET OUTTA THERE, YOU'LL DIE MANkao_shiawase.png

I just did. DON'T tell me I don't have a personality disorder if I manage to use my 47kao_fire.png BRUHkao_horror.pngkao_horror.png
