竜巻 has the "Common 14k" tag, but if you look at the "words that use 竜 / 巻" list while using the "most common words" filter, 竜巻 is not listed.
Is this a bug or is this on purpose because "Common 14k" is not common enough? i.e. it's not part of the "most common words"?
In any case I find it unintuitive, I would expect to find it among the most commonly used words. I personally think that every word with a "common" tag should be listed when using that filter.
14k is a pretty good sized vocabulary. I think most of the tags used on renshuu apply to a much smaller group than that. JLPT-N1 for instance, which is a tag from jmdict, applies to only 3340 words. And most students would consider those words too advanced to consider until they have had several years of Japanese.
According to the help, the meaning of that tag is: Common xxx - In the most common xxx words found in newspapers. Grouped in blocks of 500. So, "Common 500" covers #1-500, while "Common 1000" covers 501-1000.
You need to know around 10k words for the N1 level though, so I guess that "all JLPT levels" filter list would be around that number. Then I wonder how much words the "most common words" filter list includes? 11k? 12k? Why not include 14k?
Otherwise it would be nice to have a "common words" filter list (including all common tags) and a "most common words" filter list. This way one can focus on ALL common words excluding rarer words from the list.
renshuu's dictionary is built off of jmdict (a publicly available dictionary), and there are *multiple* frequency markers. The "is common" is one of them, and then there are others that come from specific, published lists. The Common XXX ones come from a specific one based on newspapers.
As an aside, there is not *really* a "you need to know 10k words for the jlpt n1" - that is unofficial info that has been passed around since forever, and while it may be true, it is (just like all jlpt lists and word counts) just a best guess based on the thoughts and opinions of list editors over the years.
That being said, I may be able to expand the kanji related words filter in the future to allow for more fine-grained selections :)
